1999 年 12 月 19 日，发现号航天飞机从 NASA 肯尼迪航天中心发射升空，执行哈勃太空望远镜的第三次维修任务。通过三次计划之外的太空行走，发现号航天飞机上的宇航员成功完成了对哈勃太空望远镜的更新升级任务，使这台当时已经工作了十年的太空望远镜具备了再工作下一个十年的条件。在这次维修任务中，宇航员 Michael Foale 和 Claude Nicollier 在位于哈勃太空望远镜保护性外壳的载荷舱中安装了一台精确引导传感器 (Fine Guidance Sensor). 1999 年 12 月 24 日，完成维修的哈勃太空望远镜被从发现号的货舱释放。
